Just imagine that you do not have the freedom to speak out. That you don’t have the freedom of a fair trial, the freedom to demonstrate or the freedom of impartial education. Impossible in Europe? Unfortunately that is the case in Hungary.
That is why I want to show you the stories of Adrienn, András, Bea and Dávid. Four incredibly brave people who are fighting for freedom in Hungary.
Watch their stories on YouTube
In the final video of this series I lay out why Europe needs to intervene to help the Hungarian people. They cannot resist Viktor Orbán’s oppression alone, while the EU keeps funding him and his corrupt friends.
Because what is happening in Hungary could happen to all of us too. The rule of law, democracy and fundamental rights are often the first victims of far-right policies. And now, we see the center-right breaking the firewall with the far right, working together to weaken legislation that protects our communities and our planet.
I am convinced that we as Europeans won’t let that happen. But it is time to raise our voice and to stand up for the Hungarian people, and the freedoms of us all. Can we count on your support?
Kindest regards,
“How would you feel to be portrayed as an enemy in your own country?” One of the things that disturbs us the most about the rule of law crisis in Hungary is that those who stand up against Orbán to protect human rights, are the ones that face some of the highest personal costs. Dávid’s case is especially daunting considering the size and intensity of the intimidation and smear campaigns orchestrated by the Orbán government against him. This makes it even more impressive that Dávid, and all other human rights activists in Hungary, continue to stand up for democracy and freedom. The EU should take action against Orbán’s anti-NGO legislation and intimidation. Hungarian civil society cannot keep standing up for our common values if we fail to stand up for them. Europe, don't abandon the Hungarian people, defend their freedoms.

This is Bea's story. As a teacher, and part of the Tanítanék teachers’ protest movement, she took the courageous decision to strike as a protest against the Hungarian government’s policy to restrict teachers’ freedoms and to underfund the schools. Eventually she quit as a public school teacher, bidding her dream job farewell.

This is especially the case for Hungarian LGBTQIA+ people, who have been scapegoated by the Orbán government and are being portrayed as a threat to children – an implication that is simply wrong and disgusting. When national governments no longer protect, and even violate the rights of its citizens, it is the responsibility of the EU to step in. The EU is simply not doing enough to protect the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. But fortunately there are NGOs like the Helsinki Committee and people like András, who protect the rights of LGBTQIA+ people and all others in Hungary whose rights are being taken away. And they do so at a high personal cost: seen as an enemy of the state and targeted with intimidation and smear campaigns. The fact that amazing people like András continue their fight for democracy and human rights gives us the strength and inspiration to do so too.
